This week we are highlighting jewelry manufacturer Peter Morfino! Peter specializes in the traditional jewelry department, but has expanded his expertise to experiment with 3D modeling. His shop, The Peoples Jeweler, is full of lovely jewelry including pendants and awesome, unique midi rings!

Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? Where are you located?
I am a gold and platinum jewelry manufacturer. I sell wholesale to retail jewelers all across the country. My alter ego however is The Peoples Jeweler! This gives me the chance to offer my jewelry directly to the public, and to eliminate the middle man!

What’s the story behind your designs? What inspires you?
I’ve been intrigued by the manufacturing process of jewelry ever since I was a small child. In my opinion all jewelry can be manufactured two ways; The wrong way, and the right way. My inspiration comes from the complex work of experienced jewelers and metalsmiths. I like to apply their methods to simplistic designs. Nothing fancies me more than presenting a piece of fine jewelry to a consumer and explaining the details which are not always visible with the naked eye.

What brought you to 3D printing with Shapeways?
I see Shapeways as the perfect platform for offering fine jewelry directly to the public. The more people who can see my designs, the better!

How did you learn how to design in 3D?
We learned to create jewelry the old fashion way, on the Bench! Slowly but surely we fine tuned our CAD skills to create flawless 3D models.

How do you promote your work?
My work with The Peoples Jeweler is promoted on Shapeways, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Tumblr. My wholesale business is well established (under a secret name) and customers shop catalogs, and websites.

Who are your favorite designers or artists? Who in the Shapeways community has served as an inspiration to you?
My favorite designers and artist in the jewlry field are not household names. However they have mastered their craft, and their work. Often times their designs are seen in famous jewelry stores, yet they are never in the spotlight. As a whole though, I am blown away by the creativity I see on the Shapeways website. Whether it be jewelry or iPhone accessories, the creativeness is astonishing.

If you weren’t limited by current technologies, what would you want to make using 3D printing?
I’ve always been intrigued with flight. I think the only thing holding me back from using 3D printers to develop aircraft is my lack of knowledge. I am sure that it is already possible though.
