This weeks designer spotlight highlights John Fitzpatrick – web developer by day, 3D modeler by night living in Brooklyn, NY.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? Where are you located?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree from the The University of Cincinnati which is one of the best design schools in the world. I have designed mobile phones for Ericsson GE, refrigerators for Frigidaire as well as emergency medical devices for the Long Beach Medical Group. At one point in time, I could walk into a Best Buy and see a cell phone, refrigerators and dozens of DVDs that I had worked on with a team of really smart and great people. I am a web developer by day at KBS+, 3D modeler by night that lives in Brooklyn, NY.

What’s the story behind your designs? What inspires you?
The lucky heart pendant was inspired from an app I created for iOS called the Crystal Carousel of Magic Fortunes which you can download for free. I raised the money to be able to build the app through a successful Kickstarter campaign. I am hoping to create more 3D Prints from the crystals within the Carousel of Magic Fortunes app. Shapeways did an incredible job printing the Lucky Heart Pendant and I got a great comment and photos from @embrick that I truly appreciate. Thank you for considering me for Designer Spotlight.

What brought you to 3D printing with Shapeways?
I wanted an outlet for my Industrial Design skills and I think 3D Printing will fuel the next Industrial Revolution.

How did you learn how to design in 3D?
I went to school for it.

How do you promote your work?
Mostly word of mouth and social networks:  websiteFacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

Who are your favorite designers or artists? Who in the Shapeways community has served as an inspiration to you?
Henry Drefuss, Don Genaro (who was a mentor), Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Ford, Charles and Ray Eames, Syd Mead and Jonathan Ive. I am a fan of Amznfx, Lenshop, Pete Rossdale and 3D Artefice at Shapeways.

If you weren’t limited by current technologies, what would you want to make using 3D printing?
I would like to be able to make designs in Graphene, the miracle material. It’s transparent and 1 carbon atom thick. It’s 100 times stronger than steel, harder than a diamond and conducts heat and electricity with great efficiency.

Anything else? (Optional)
