Product Description
RN Genova is the lead ship of a class of two hypothetical Italian battle cruisers, built in between the Cavour and Duilio classes of dreadnoughts, and modernized in the late 1930s along the same lines. It is in their modernized state they are presented in model form.
The design was developed as a request and in collaboration with a customer specifically asking a hypothetical, modernized Italian battle cruiser featuring three triple 320 mm turret and various calibres of secondary armament. The following is an abstract of the design process for the ship, both as a what-if and for the model.
The two-ship class was developed as a battle cruiser counterpart to the Cavour and subsquent, almost identical Duilio class dreadnoughts, with both ships laid down in 1912. Originally 179 mt long and 28 mt wide, with a displacement of 19,200 tons, they sported three triple 305 mm gun turrets used on Regia Marina capital ships since their first dreadnought, Dante Alighieri. The secondary battery consisted in sixteen 152 mm guns in casemates along the side, and the ships had a maximum speed of 24 knots, a couple of knots slower than the Indefatigable class just entering service. On the plus side, armour was a respectable 220 mm belt with a 70 mm deck.
Genova and her sister were both taken in for radical reconstruction in 1940 following the Cavour class, and were rebuilt along pretty much the same lines, with a few changes during work. All three main battery turrets had their guns rebored to 320 mm as did the battleships, the ship was lengthened by slightly over 30 mt and small bulges provided with the new anti-torpedo protection. Displacement rose to 26,600 tons to accomodate more armour, with the deck raised to 110 mm overall (main belt remaining 220 mm), and an astonishing increment in speed to 29 kn. The secondary battery comprised two triple 152 mm turrets superfiring over the main ones, plus six small twin 135 mm guns, straight from the Capitani Romani class, divided between both sides of the ship. AA consisted of twelve 65 mm single mounts on and around the superstructure.
