Although not initially impressed with the Red Army's T-34, the tank was enough of a threat that, as with the KV-1, the Werhmacht saw a need to develop an effective counter to it. Some German officers suggested that the T-34 be simply copied. The initial project to be drafted at Daimler-Benz looked almost identical, followed by another that traded the simple Christie suspension for schachtellaufwerk running gear, as shown on this model. Ultimately, however, it was MAN's design, Ausf M, that went on to be produced as the PzKpfw V "Panther."
