Product Description
The Airco D.H.5 was an attempt to retain the outstanding forward visibility of pushers like the DH2 and FE.2b in a tractor biplane. It had severely negatively-staggered wings and -- while it accomplished its goal -- it left the pilot blind in the vital rear quarter.
It proved difficult to fly for new pilots, but once mastered it was aerobatic below 10,000 feet and fairly strong. Put all these factors together and you get a poor fighter aircraft but a good ground-attack aircraft, and it performed well in that role at Ypres and Cambrai. Eventually both RFC (№24 and №32) and Australian (№41, 64, and 68) squadrons replaced their DH5s with SE.5a's.
This product comes in both 1:144 and 1:285/6mm/1:288 scales. The 1:285 product comes with two aeroplanes joined by disposable links. Since propeller blades are hard to print at that scale, detachable propeller disks are included instead.
EDIT: Models at scales smaller than 1:144 may no longer be available. Shapeways discontinued the material for which they were designed, and the newer materials require that each and every model be adjusted to thicken surfaces like wings. If you are interested in a particular model in a small scale, please let me know and I will prioritize it higher in the queue.
