This experimental tank destroyer, codename Object 416, was developed as a heavily-armoured yet lightwieght (due to its small size) replacement for the more conventional tanks of 1950. It has twice the armour protection of the 27-tonne T-34-76, with a maximum thickness of 110mm, but weighs only 24 tonnes. Unlike most Soviet tanks, the drive sprockets are at the front, but even more unusual was the placement of the entire 4-man crew inside the turret. Unfortunately, this meant that the turret could not rotate more than 70 degrees while the vehicle was moving. Ultimately, the design's advantages did not outweigh the inconveniences of its operation, and it was never accepted into production. Had it been made in a later decade and had drive-by-wire technology, then it might have actually gone somewhere...
