Space dragons are the most common of all biological space monsters, although they are fortunately very rare. They are known throughout the Alpha and Omega Octants. Space dragons are sentient, but just how sentient is not known. They can plan and react; they can maneuver to bring themselves facing a weak shield at the moment their natural weapons (phasers and plasma torpedoes) are ready to fire.

Space dragons have an unfortunate habit of ravaging inhabited planets, although they prey entirely on the less well defended colony planets. They never attack major industrial worlds and there are few reports of them attacking worlds without sentient populations. They seem to go after crops to eat and infrastructure to ravage. They will attack colonies of any empire in any kind of atmosphere. It is known that radioactive elements and processed metals form a key part of their diets, and these are most easily found in colonial infrastructure.

Space dragons can live very long lives, perhaps even centuries, and grow bigger with every year they age. An ancient space dragon is a formidable foe for an entire fleet. The biological waste of space dragons is considered a valuable mineral resource. There are few records of more than one space dragon appearing at the same time, and these are a female space dragon and her children. The mother can control the children up to a certain age but will fiercely protect them and will never use them as expendable attrition units. The most dangerous place to be is between a mother dragon and her babies; the second most dangerous place is between a female space dragon "in heat" and the three or four males circling around her.

There is one theory that space dragons were genetically engineered by an extinct empire. It is known that one empire in the Omega Octant uses genetically modified wild dragons as starships.

There is no means to detect or track a space dragon until it reaches the immediate area of a targeted planet.

As can be seen by the longer “horns” on his head and by the length and shape of his tail, this is an old male dragon. While a heavy cruiser would likely be a challenge (probably winnable for the dragon), he would be perfectly capable of destroying a light cruiser.

The dragon is available in a variety of materials. Dragons are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
