Product Description
Just as the Phoenicians invented the bireme, the first multi-banked galley, their descendents, the Carthaginians, were the first to put more than one man on each oar. This is where the naming system of the ships begin to break down, and the prefix does not correspond to the number of banks of oars, but the number of rowers instead. This ship in particular is built as a bireme, but has two men to each oar, hence the "quad" in quadrireme. There were other configurations, but this is the most common. This ship is approaching the limit in terms of size for a Carthaginian ship, as the military port of Carthage did not have accomodations for ships wider than 7 metres, which is what the full-size version of this ship would be at the waterline. The Roman quadrireme is considerably wider.
