I would argue that this tank, more than any other, is the forerunner of the modern main battle tank. This was the definitive Soviet heavy tank design of World War II, and with over 4000 units built, is also the most widely produced (heavy tank, that is). The initial development of the IS-2 was the replacement of the 85mm gun on the IS-1 with the same 122mm gun used on the ISU-122 tank destroyer, but with no further modifications. This comparatively rare variant can be acquired by combining the IS-2 turret with the IS-1 hull, both available in the "model parts" section of my shop. This model, however, is the much more common 1944 variant, with a single glacis plate in the front, as well as improved tracks and some other minor changes. Unlike its predecessors in the KV series, the IS-2 had its armour concentrated at the front, as it was designed as a breakthrough tank/tank destroyer for the final push westward, ultimately playing a key part in the Battle of Berlin.
