Phönix D.II

The Phönix D.II improved on the Phönix D.I by lightening the airframe, eliminating dihedral, and redesigning the tail, making it more responsive. It started service at the front line in May with six Fliks, but there were problems with the engine bearers that led to accidents, and a wing failure in June resulted in a loss in confidence in the plane among pilots, who preferred the well-proven 225hp Albatros D.III. It was built in three series: Series 122, 222, and 322.  Its major flaw was that the machine guns were buried in the fuselage, making it impossible to clear a jam.

This model comes in both 1:144 and 1:285/6mm/1:288 scales.  The 1:285 scale product has two aeroplanes, each with a detachable, translucent propeller disk rather than propeller blades (since they are hard to print at the smaller scales).  They are joined by disposable links to keep the price down, since single-part models are more affordable.  You can break the links with nail clippers, wire cutters, or similar.

DESIGNER NOTE:  Models at scales smaller than 1:144 may no longer be available.  Shapeways discontinued the material for which they were designed, and the newer materials require that each and every model be adjusted to thicken surfaces like wings.  If you are interested in a particular model in a small scale, please let me know and I will prioritize it higher in the queue.
