Product Description
Yosemite, the US's third National Park and more recently a World Heritage Site, is also one of the most popular National Parks in the USA, with over four million visitors per year. From the floor of the half-mile-wide main valley featured in this model rise a number of impressive formations: Yosemite Falls' 2400' three-stage waterfall, El Capitan's sheer 3300' cliff face, Royal Arches, and Half Dome, which rises 4700' from the valley floor at an impossibly steep angle. Bridalveil Fall, a picturesque 600' waterfall, originates from a ravine that has already fallen 2000' before plunging to the rocks on the valley floor, but then becomes a wide stream braiding through the forest before reaching the Merced River. One of my favorite places on Earth, Glacier Point, offers a panoramic view over the main valley some 3200' below. Follow the Mist Trail out the East end of the valley, past Sierra Point and Grizzly Peak, past Vernal Fall and Emerald Pool, to Liberty Cap---another impressive granite dome---and the beginning of Little Yosemite Valley. All of these features come to life in an accurate, three-dimensional map that you can hold in your hands.

This piece, centered on the main valley, includes all of the aforementioned sites plus over 31 square miles of glacially-carved granite-filled landscape. It was generated from LiDAR (laser-scan) data graciously released by the USGS, so this is the most accurate 3D map of Yosemite created to date. We hope that, as you run your fingers across this impressive terrain, you will find lonely sharp peaks and hidden valleys not featured on flat maps, and be inspired to seek them out in person.

The Explorer series of TinyMtn models is designed to break our usual impression of mountains. We generally see mountains one at a time, from a distance, and from the ground. While all TinyMtn models give you a fresh perspective on any one peak, the Explorer series presents mountains in identical scale, and shifted up so that sea level is at the bottom of the base. Thus, when you set two Explorer models next to each other, you will immediately notice which is taller, which rises more from its base, which is more massive, and so on. Plus, all Explorer models come in full color, making them just that much more realistic.

Model scale is 1:50000
Model covers an area approximately 7.4 by 4.2 miles
Altitudes covered: 3877' to 8844'
There is no vertical exaggeration applied to this model. This is a true-to-life scale model of a real place.

TinyMtn models are most affordable in the "Sandstone" and "White Strong and Flexible" materials. This model is in "Sandstone," which is a glued gypsum material. When you receive the model it will be ready for display, though it may smell funny and need some time to air out. "Sandstone" models are much more brittle than "White Strong and Flexible" models, but feel more like light stone. Do not soak it in water, though you can safely seal it with Polycrylic or a similar water-based clear spray sealant. Read more about this popular material here.

These models have been optimized for the above materials, and are not offered in other materials for strength or cost reasons. If you need one in another material, please tinymtnbiz@gmail.com and we'll do our best to fulfill your request.
