Product Description
These earrings depict the guard cells of the stomata, pores on the surface of the plant that facilitate gas exchange for the plant. Through the stomata, plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and respire oxygen. The opening and closing of the stoma is regulated by osmotic pressure in the guard cells and is dependent on carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity, humidity and other environmental factors. The guard cells depicted in this pendant show the large nucleus in each guard cell as well as the chloroplasts. Designed in collaboration with Prof. Keiko Torii, University of Washington.

Earrings do not ship from Shapeways with earring backs. You will need to purchase these yourself, or use some from another pair of earrings. Post diameter is 0.85mm and fits standard earring backs. Earrings are 1cm in the longest dimension (top to bottom).
