The Battleground Toys 1:16 Sd.Kfz. 302 Goliath was designed with many of the features of the original used by the German army. Of note are the highly detailed tracks and running gear as well as the cable storage loop. It is shipped as one piece so no assembly is required.
The Sd.Kfz. 302 Goliath was a small tracked vehicle that operated similar to a tank. Loaded with 60kg of explosives, the Goliath was essentially a rolling landmine. Created in 1942 and remotely driven by the driver from a control box, the Goliath's primary purpose was move toward and destroy both mobile and stationary targets in situations where infantry would have been too exposed to enemy fire. Common targets were road blocks, enemy vehicles including tanks, small bridges and bunkers. Because it was armored like a tank it was also resistant to gunfire and therefore very effective against machine gun nests and infantry formations. The control box was connected to a spool of 650 meters of wire that was pulled out of the back of the Goliath as it sped away from the driver. One of the switches on the control box was used to trigger the explosives on board when the Goliath was close enough to it's target to destroy it. The first generation of Goliaths were battery powered, but due to challenges maintaining and repairing electric motors in the field the second generation of Goliaths were powered by simple gasoline engines.
Based on historical photos and film, the Goliath was generally painted flat Dunkelgelb (dark yellow) or one of the bi-color or tri-color German camouflage schemes in use by the Germans during the latter half of the war. Though not always, many photos show a pair of large white stripes on the rear wire spool cover. These were used to assist the driver in visually guiding the Goliath toward it's target as it moved off into the distance.
