This ring is a space filling representation of a single histone octamer-DNA interaction, where the protein has been removed to show a segment of DNA wrapped roughly 1.65 times around.

DNA is the fundamental molecule that stores the vast majority of genetic information in an organism. 

It contains the complete repository of instructions for development, functioning and reproduction.

Information is encoded in sequences of nucleotides that complement each other along to antiparallel to form the universally recognised double helix structure. 

To correctly regulate gene expression, as well as protect the molecule, the DNA helix is wound around a group of histone proteins to form a ‘beads on a string’ structure, that can then undergo further packing to result in a dense chromatin package.
