Geosmin

The Earth's Perfume. The first day of spring has an unmistakable scent, perceivable as soon as the ground thaws up, and emits a distinct smell originating from tiny amounts of (–)-geosmin. Mild spring rain multiplies this exceptional experience, and awakens all senses. Get in the mood for spring!

(–)-Geosmin [(–)-(4S,4aS,8aR)-decahydro-4,8a-dimethylnaphthalen-4a-ol] is responsible for the stimulating scent of freshly ploughed soil, an impression magnified by the first drops of a refreshing spring rain (Meaningful Scents around the World. Olfactory, Chemical, Biological, and Cultural Considerations, Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta/Wiley-VCH, 2006, p. 152–155). But what is very pleasant and highly enjoyable at extremely low concentrations, can quickly turn obnoxious at higher doses; and, possessing a very low odor detection threshold, that easily happens for (–)-geosmin. Then you suddenly get transposed into a dirty wet basement, a mouldy hut in the tropics, or a dismally dark earthy cave full of bats, which sometimes can even be intentional or even desired:

When Ellen Covey got her hands on geosmin, it inspired her to create such a cave smell for her 'Bat' perfume (Zoologist Perfumes, 2015) – indubitably the scent with the most distinct geosmin note so far, and quite possibly the fragrance most loved by bats. With this (–)-geosmin pendant you can therefore also pay homage to your inner superhero or superheroine, your inner batman or batwoman. Cacti use (–)-geosmin and (+)-dehydrogeosmin to attract bats for pollination, and camels in turn use these odorants to find water sources in the desert.  

The dimensions of the geosmin pendant that actually overall even looks a bit bat-like, are ca. 3.3 cm × 2.8 cm × 2.8 cm. Thus, it is one of the larger pendants that can also be worn more offbeat as a bling or used as a keychain. The eyelet hole has a diameter of ca. 4.0 mm, which makes it compatible with a variety of straps, chains, necklaces, and also key rings.
