I started working with braid designs to make a wedding ring and matching bangles for my fiance. In these designs the braid is wrapped into a cylindrical shape, like these bangles or this ring. Playing with the concept some more, I turned the braid on its side and discovered a pendant that looks like a sort of braided starburst. These earrings are a smaller version of the braid that I made to make a set with the pendant.
The wire that traces the braid has a pentagonal shape, so one side of the earring shows a flat face and the other side is ridged. The model contains a pair of earrings that are joined by a loop to allow Shapeways to handle them as a single piece during manufacturing. You can snip that ring with fingernail clippers or a pair of scissors to separate the pair. This design is large, so we offer it only in lightweight plastic. We also have a smaller version that is a comfortable weight when printed in steel or any of the cast metals.
We offer complete earrings made from this model (with earwires and sometimes other pieces added) in our Etsy shop, although we don't keep the full variety of materials that Shapeways offers in stock. (If you're looking for a particular material or variation and don't see it, just ask!)
